A Culinary Tour of Lazio, Umbria & Tuscany

Eight guests. Nine days. One long, unhurried love letter to Italy's countryside — its hilltop towns, its small-time producers, its slow food traditions, and the kind of meals that make you close your eyes on the first bite.

This isn't a standard tour.  It's cheese tastings with people who've made cheese their whole lives, wine poured by the person who grew the grapes, and just enough free time to get pleasantly lost in a medieval alley. Here's what your days will look like.

A note on the itinerary: a few details may shift as we get closer to departure — small producers keep small schedules! If anything changes, we promise to replace it with something of equal or greater charm.

Tuesday, April 27 — Welcome to Rome

The tour officially kicks off on the 28th, but we ask everyone to arrive a day early so we can all start together, jet lag and all. We'll have a hotel arranged for you, and that evening we'll gather for a welcome dinner to meet your fellow travelers, raise a glass, and start swapping stories before the real adventure even begins.

Wednesday, April 28 — Rome to Sabina

We start where any good trip should: with cheese. A Rome cheese tour sets the tone before we load into the van and head for the hills of Sabina, Lazio. Our home for the next few nights is a medieval hilltop town with nonstop charm and views that don't quit. We'll arrive in time to settle in and share our first dinner in the countryside.

Thursday, April 29 — Life in a Medieval Village

A walking tour through our little village reveals how life here has shifted — and, in charming ways, hasn't — since medieval times. Lunch is at a beloved local spot, followed by some free time to wander on your own. In the afternoon, we roll up our sleeves for a cooking class in traditional Lazio dishes, the kind of recipes that live in grandmothers' hands more than cookbooks.

 

Friday, April 30 — Wild Landscapes & Liquid Gold

A gentle nature hike with our naturalist guide takes us through the local landscape — edible plants, layers of history, and maybe a Roman ruin or two hiding in the hills. Lunch with our guide and some downtime follow before an evening spent touring a local olive oil mill, tasting fresh-pressed oil, and enjoying a light dinner under the olive trees.

Saturday, May 1 — Onward to Tuscany

We say goodbye to our hilltop palazzo and set off for San Gimignano, driving through Lazio's countryside into Tuscany's rolling hills, where spring wildflowers put on their own show. A light lunch breaks up the drive before we arrive, check in, and share a group dinner in our new home base.

Sunday, May 2 — The Manhattan of Tuscany

San Gimignano earns its nickname honestly — a historical walking tour tells you why. From there, we settle in for a wine tasting paired with a light lunch, learning what makes this region's terroir so special. The rest of the day is yours: shop, sightsee, wander, eat — however you like to spend a Tuscan afternoon.

Monday, May 3 — Goats, Cheese & the Green Heart of Italy

Of course there's cheese on this trip — today we meet the goats themselves, learn the craft of cheesemaking firsthand, and sit down to a cheese-centered lunch. Afterward, sit back for the scenic drive from Tuscany into Umbria, "the green heart of Italy." Our next home is Orvieto, a hilltop town so striking it has to be seen to be believed. We'll check in, take an evening walkabout, and share a group dinner.

Tuesday, May 4 — Exploring Orvieto

A walking tour uncovers Orvieto's fascinating history and its many charms, then the rest of the day is yours for shopping and sightseeing — and there's no shortage of either. We'll reconvene for a group dinner to close out the day.

 

Wednesday, May 5 — Underground Orvieto & a Countryside Winery

Orvieto hides a secret beneath its streets: a network of caves and tunnels carved centuries ago. We'll tour them and learn the story of why. From there, we head to a countryside winery for lunch and a tasting before returning to Orvieto for your last free evening in this corner of Umbria.

Thursday, May 6 — Back to Rome

Our final day together brings us back to the Eternal City for one last food tour through Rome's best bites. Take some time to wander the city on your own before we gather one final time for our farewell dinner — a last supper to toast the trip, the friendships, and all the small towns that made it unforgettable.
